Research has shown that parents of children with developmental, medical or behavioral needs often “experience high levels of stress related to raising their children with special needs,” according to Mandi Silverman Psy.D., a clinical psychologist at the ADHD and Disruptive Behavior Disorders Center at the Child Mind Institute in New York City.
Silverman goes on to state that the additional psychological and physical stress can extend to the whole family. The most important thing that a parent of a child with anxiety can do is to start with themselves with self-care.
It is estimated that about 75-90% of illness is related to stress. Chronic stress puts our body in a constant state of fight, flight or freeze. This system is supposed to help us with an immediate threat and then turn off. When that doesn’t happen our body pulls from more resources to help us cope and thankfully, we can. However, prolonged coping usually comes at a cost. It costs us energy, contributing to inflammation, adrenal stress and possibly break down our nervous system.
I know it can be difficult to find the time and funds are limited to get to your own appointments. This is a place to start. These will be movements that you can do yourself. The goal is to release the deeper neurological stress that we may or may not be aware of. We often get used to functioning at a level of stress that becomes our norm and are unaware of the full implications.
Also, by taking care of ourselves, not only do we have more energy to expend towards our family healing, we are more effective in what we do. Our nervous system being in a state of calm helps their nervous system calm.
